Porto Cervo, 2nd July 2010. The sea off Porto Cervo in the Costa Smeralda region of Sardinia was the perfect venue today for a refreshing dip to help combat the soaring temperatures in the area but was not, unfortunately, well suited to competitive sailing. The Race Committee at the Audi Sardinia Cup, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 28th June to 3rd July, postponed the start of racing on day four of the regatta until 3pm in the hope that the 4 knot breeze would fill in. The wait, however, turned out to be in vain and racing was cancelled for the day leaving all to be decided tomorrow, the final day of the event.

Yesterday’s classification therefore remains valid for the eight participating teams as they head into the final races of this ISAF Offshore Team World Championship. With five windward leewards and a coastal race run team Germany, composed of the Farr 40 Struntje Light and the Melges 32 Teasing Machine, sits in first place. Italy, with the Farr 40 Joe Fly and Melges 32 B Lin Sailing is currently in second place ahead of USA with Barking Mad and Bliksem.

Principal Race Officer Peter “Luigi” Reggio commented on the light conditions: “There was very little wind today but at around 1 p.m. it looked like it was building a little so we took the crews out onto the water but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. The latest forecasts we have for tomorrow give a bit more wind so hopefully we will be able to get a few races in. We are taking the guys out an hour earlier so we should be able to.”

Owners and crews will be attending a gala dinner at the YCCS Clubhouse this evening and the final prize giving is scheduled to be held on the Club’s Piazza Azzurra at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Racing is scheduled to start at 11 am tomorrow, 3rd July. North easterly breezes of six to seven knots are predicted.
