Kokomo takes the lead in the 2009 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship

Day two of racing at the 2009 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship was held off Sydney Heads on the area known as the Macquarie Circle.  Nine teams made their way out to the course across a flat and tranquil Sydney Harbour to find a very light east nor east breeze that reached a maximum of nine knots over the three races sailed for the day.

Overnight leaders Guido Belgiorno Nettis’s Transfusion went into the day with a one point lead over defending and two time Australian Farr 40 Champion Lang Walker and his crew on Kokomo.  These two teams have many regatta wins to their name and both boats have championship pedigrees with Transfusion being the 2005 Rolex Farr 40 World Champion boat and Kokomo being the 2008 Hamilton Island Australian Farr 40 Champion boat.

After three races in very light shifty breezes Kokomo have moved into the lead after finishing 2,1,2 in today’s races.  

“It was extremely tough out there today with the very light breeze.  We have managed to get into a good position but still have three races to go before this title can be given out”, commented Walker.

Transfusion won the first race of the day and Chris Way and Ian Burns’ Easy Tiger II sailed a terrific race six to slide across the line in front of Kokomo and Transfusion.

After three games of snakes and ladders on the water, winner of the recent Farr 40 Sprint Series Ivan Wheen’s Sputnik has moved up into third overall in the standings with Brett Neill’s White Cloud still in contact just one point behind Sputnik.

Racing in the 2009 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship finishes tomorrow and the winners of both the 2009 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship and the 2008-09 Farr 40 Australian Circuit will be crowned.
