Racing in the 2008 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship started today on Sydney Harbour with the first three races being completed.  The final event in the 2007-08 Australian Farr 40 Circuit started in the predicted nor’ east breeze which built throughout the day to reach 15 knots.

Sydney’s iconic harbour provided a flat water race course with the usual harbour traffic adding to the tests each team had to overcome while trying to out manoeuvre their class mates.

Defending Australian Farr 40 Champion Lang Walker and his team on Kokomo leads the nine boat fleet after the first day of racing.  Racing against nine other teams Kokomo had to work hard in each of the three races today as teams threw down the challenge.

“Today was a good day for our team but there are still two days to go.  Racing today was hard work and the harbour racing kept every team on their toes”, said Walker.

Brett Neill’s White Cloud made a fantastic recovery in the first race of the series to take the first win after having to restart when they were called over early on the startline.  Kokomo finished in second with Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan rounding out the top three.

Race two and in a building breeze the finishing positions for Kokomo and White Cloud from the first race were reversed with Guido Belgiorno Nettis’s Transfusion sliding into third.

Transfusion went on to win the third race of the day which helped move them up the overall positions to second.  White Cloud slipped down the placings after a disappointing 10th in race three.

“We are pretty pleased with where we are after today.  This is our first season in the Farr 40 class and it is great to have such close racing at each event”, commented Belgiorno-Nettis.

Racing continues over the weekend with the 2008 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Champion and the winner of the 2007-08 Australian Farr 40 Circuit being decided on Sunday.
