The final event in the 2007-08 Australian Farr 40 Circuit, the 2008 Hamilton Island Farr 40 Australian Championship will be held February 22-24 and will be hosted by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.
Defending Australian Champion Lang Walker and his team on Kokomo will line up against nine other teams, all with their sights set on the prize.
“Competition will be tough this weekend, there are a number of teams who are capable of winning this title. Our team is the same as we last year at this event and who we have sailed with for the last 12 months. After the Nationals we head overseas to race at the 2008 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in Miami along with two other Australian team ”, said Walker. |
Teams from New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand will race over the three days with one day of harbour racing planned.
Last weekend’s Farr 40 Sprint Series was a preview of the action that can be expected in this close one design racing. A number of teams have shown good form over the last three Farr 40 class circuit events. Class newcomers Russell McCart's Night Nurse and Graeme Wood's Wot Now both showed they are capable of finishing races in the top three in this highly contested one design class.
Ivan Wheen’s Sputnik has won two of the last three events and Walker’s Kokomo have been consistently placed in the top three. Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan finished second in the Sprint Series event last weekend holding off challenges from a number of teams.
“It’s great to see two new owners joining the class for this event having raced with us last weekend at the Sprint Series. I think we will see some great racing if last weekend was anything to go by. Most of our team sailed in Copenhagen at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds and it’s great to have them together again”, commented Wheen.
Currently leading the Australian Farr 40 Circuit is Martin Hill with Guido Belgiorno Nettis, who is sailing his first season with the Farr 40 class in second and Walker, who won the Australian Farr 40 2006-07 circuit, in third.
Hill remarked “It’s been a fantastic season and our team has worked hard at each event. Our crew work has developed and after we finish the Australian season we will head off to Miami to take part in the 2008 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds which is going to be a big challenge but one we are keen to take on”.
