Nov 11 - Sputnik Leads After Day One of the Farr 40 Pittwater Regatta PDF Print E-mail
After a challenging day on the water for the eight Farr 40’s racing at Pittwater on Sydney’s northern beaches this weekend, Ivan Wheen’s Sputnik is leading the fleet. Second and third places are on equal points with Don Telford’s Rushcutter leading Lang Walker’s Kokomo on a count back.

The day proved to be a tough one for the race committee and competitor alike.  Racing started out in a very light five knot westerly breeze and Kokomo sailed well to lead the fleet for the entire race with Sputnik finishing in second nearly two minutes after Kokomo.  Ray Robert’s Quantum Racing maintained their place to finish third just 10 seconds behind Sputnik.

Race two and the race committee from host club Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club had to make course changes at every mark as the breeze swung from the west to move through 180 degrees and settle in an easterly direction.

Class newcomer Jeff Carter’s Revolution Edake did well early in the race to lead the fleet but the shifty breeze didn’t do them any favours and they slipped back down the positions. Rushcutter did well with young Laser champion sailor Tom Slingsby calling tactics, to hold off Sputnik and cross the finish line seven seconds ahead with Kokomo finishing just 40 seconds behind Sputnik.

“I had a really fun day down the back of the boat, a little different to the Laser”, commented Slingsby.

As the breeze built in race three to 12 knots, Sputnik jumped to an early lead and picked all the right shifts to hold position during the entire race as did Rushcutter.  A decision to go left on the second upwind leg cost Kokomo their third place but Quantum Racing called the right move and fought it out with Rushcutter to cross the finish line in third.

“We had a fun day but the wind was tricky and unstable and we were lucky with a couple of calls.  We’re pretty happy to end up with Boat of the Day, the team is working well together”, remarked Sputnik tactician Olympian Tom King.

Racing wraps up tomorrow and currently the forecast is for a very warm day with some high cloud at times and moderate to fresh northwest to northeast winds.
