June 25 - Day Two - Rolex Farr 40 Worlds 2009

Barking Mad dominates Rolex Farr 40 Worlds 2009

Porto Cervo, Italy. 24th June 2009. Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA) leads the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship overall classification for the second day running. Richardson, with tactician Terry Hutchinson (America’s Cup campaigns in 2000, 2003 and 2007) took his second bullet of the series in the first of today’s two races while Giovanni Maspero’s Joe Fly (ITA) claimed victory in the second race, bringing her up to second place overall, just one point behind Barking Mad. Massimo Mezzaroma’s Nerone (ITA) sits in fourth place overall in the event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, ahead of current World Champion Vincenzo Onorato with his Mascalzone Latino (ITA).

The first race of the day, the fourth of the series, started at 11.15 am after a general recall. Accompanied by 16 to 18 knots of westerly wind (280°), Barking Mad took the start and set the pace around the course, increasing her lead continuously to finish well ahead of Nerone and Transfusion (AUS), owned by Guido Belgiorno Nettis. Joe Fly, with Francesco Bruni on tactics, was in second place around the first windward mark but dropped back to cross the finish line in fourth place.

June 21, 2009 - AUDI INVITATIONAL

Racing canceled at Audi Invitational

Porto Cervo, Italy:. The prevailing mistral wind which has made the regatta course off Porto Cervo one of the world’s most famous failed to cooperate for the Audi Invitational, the third leg of the Farr 40 European Circuit 2009. Yesterday’s first scheduled day of racing was abandoned due to sustained winds of 30 knots and more, all was set to rest on today’s second and final day of racing but a storm front which is passing across Italy put paid to all hopes of completing the minimum two races required to validate the event.
The 24 Farr 40s participating in the Audi Invitational left Porto Cervo Marina on schedule for the programmed 11 am start but as the Race Committee was setting the course at 270° the wind shifted to 030° and began to build to approximately 25 knots. As the Race Committee prepared the new course the storm front arrived from Porto Cervo bringing torrential rain, thunder and lightning. PRO Peter Reggio then sent the fleet back to the docks and at 1pm racing was abandoned for the day.

FOCUS AND PASSION

Veni, Vidi, Vici. Three-times in a row Vincenzo Onorato and Mascalzone Latino, the current champions, have taken the sword to all other opposition at the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. Whether in a month's time he will have done so again, is in the lap of the gods and the hands of his fellow competitors, all of who have their eyes set on one of the pre-eminent trophies in the yachting calendar. The 2009 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds runs from 24 - 27 June, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, and the burning question is, as ever, over recent seasons: who has the mettle to beat Onorato at what is seemingly his own game.

With 26 boats from 10 nations, including the USA, Australia, Greece, Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland, the Ukraine, the United Kingdom and, of course, Italy, slated to compete, the event will be a truly international affair. The Farr 40 Class is justifiably pleased in these difficult economic times to maintain not just a high number of entrants, but also a high level of competition. Geoff Stagg, of the Farr 40 Class Management Committee, expressed the feelings of the organisation, "it's just fantastic. Frankly, I'm astonished. We've got ten countries competing, at least 26 boats. When one sees that number of forty-footers on a start-line or at a mark rounding, one realises just how many boats that is. It's a lot of action."
