Nerone Reigns

Porto Cervo, 29th June 2011. Nerone (ITA), owned by Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori, leads the Farr 40 fleet at the end of the first day of racing in the second leg of the Farr 40 European Circuit 2011. The event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 29th June to 2nd July, got underway in near-perfect conditions today with approximately 15 to 18 knots of Mistral breeze accompanying Race 1 and remaining stable throughout the three scheduled windward-leewards. Nerone, with Vasco Vascotto calling tactics, took bullets in the first and third race of the day while victory in Race 2 went to fellow Italian Alessandro Barnaba's Fiamma.

Today's first race saw Nerone dominate from start to finish, choosing the favoured left side of the course, rounding the first windward mark in the lead and lengthening the gap from second-placed Enfant Terrible at each rounding. Racing was extremely close throughout the fleet and third place was hotly contested between Alessandro Barnaba's Fiamma (ITA), Nico Poons' Charisma (MON) and Provezza 8 (TUR,) owned by Hasip Gencer, with Charisma winning the battle.

Race 2 saw Fiamma, with tactician Lorenzo Bressani, cross the line first ahead of the Turkish crew aboard Provezza 8, owned by Levent Peynirci, and Enfant Terrible, with former America's Cup sailor Francesco Bruni (Luna Rossa 2003, 2007) on tactics, in third.

After placing fourth in Race 2 Nerone was back on form for what was to be the final race of the day and led the fleet once again. Enfant Terrible was second and Fiamma third.

The overall leaders after day one are therefore an all Italian group - Nerone, Enfant Terrible e Fiamma - and three points separate the top three boats while Turkey's Provezza 8 sits in fourth.

"We did well but we made a bad choice in the second race," commented Vasco Vascotto, tactician aboard Nerone, "even though we won in the other two races we are disappointed we made a rash decision. In sport you must always learn from your mistakes and we are obviously happy with our first place"

Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow at 12 midday. Westerly winds of 20 to 25 knots are forecast.
